the Maharagapuram Gandharva’s Concert in a Capsule
Video Series Initiative
For those
of us who love the idea of the sabha but cannot always spare two hours, this
series is a beginning. Each episode takes a live concert . The kind where the
air in the hall changes when the artist finds a phrase and distils it within twenty
minutes. A thread of an alapana. A niraval that lifts off unexpectedly. A
moment when the mridangam answers a question the vocalist did not know they
were asking.
You may
not recognise every raga. You do not need to. You may not know what a thani
avartanam is. That is completely fine. The music will find you exactly where
you are.
This is
not a documentary. This is not a lecture. This is a concert. Twenty minutes of
one. And if it does what we hope it does, ten minutes will not feel like nearly
enough.

the Third Episode –2nd September 2026 -“Nadhadweepam Trust Music
Festival ” Concert Concert Concert by Maharajapuram S.Ganesh Viswanathan
on July 24th 2026
A 20-minutes
journey through a soul-stirring by Ganesh Viswanathan, presented as part of
Nadhadweepam Trust's 27th Anniversary celebrations, commemorating the 118th
birth anniversary of the legendary Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer.
In a
traditional concert opener, the varnam ‘Chalamela’ set to raga Durbar in
Adi talam, Ganesh showcases the gamaka-laden raga’s full contour. The
invocatory piece to Lord Ganesha, Dikshitar’s Vatapi Ganapatim Bhajeham is
set to raga Hamsadhwani.
This was followed by the deeply devotional raga Sriranjani’s Marubalka Kriti by Thyagaraja. This particular rendition
of this Thyagaraja Kriti was popularised by Ganesh's great-grandfather
Maharajapuram Viswanatha Iyer and his disciple Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer, whose
118th birth anniversary this concert honours.
Kalyani
raga was explored in great detail and was followed by a signature piece of
Maharajapuram Santhanam in the same raga ‘Enduko Nee Manasu’. Sung in Adi
tala ( 2 Kalai) , the singer gives the space for the melody to breathe and
unfold slowly. A rare Krithi of Thyagaraja.
The
concert concludes with a challenge: A rhythmic Thillana set to
a rarer melodic raga Misra Sivaranjani, composed by Maharajapuram
Santhanam.
Ganesh is
blessed to have shared the stage in this concert with legendary accompanists
Nagai R. Muralidharan (violin) and Trichy B. Harikumar (mridangam) — artists
who have accompanied three generations of the Maharajapuram lineage:
Maharajapuram Santhanam, Maharajapuram Srinivasan, and now Ganesh Viswanathan himself.
